8 injured, 1 critically, in Lindis crash

The driver of a car involved in a collision with a campervan carrying a Spanish family, on the Lindis Pass, was last night in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital, police said.

Seven others were "walking wounded", Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said.

The crash happened on a hairpin bend, on State Highway 8 about 7.30pm.

The driver was flown to Christchurch by Westpac Rescue Helicopter after the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter from Dunedin had to turn back because of adverse weather.

It is understood four passengers were in the car, two of whom had moderate to serious injuries, one moderate injuries and one minor injuries.

The driver and two passengers in the campervan sustained moderate injuries.

It is understood Australian tourists were also involved.

The other patients were taken by ambulances to Dunstan Hospital, where a Spanish interpreter was assisting police with their investigation.

The road was closed overnight while the vehicles were removed and the scene examined by police.

The cause of the crash was unknown last night.
