Police said traffic diversions were put in place following the crash about 3.45pm near Rolleston.
Five people had moderate injuries and four had minor injuries. All nine were taken to Christchurch Hospital.
A significant amount of traffic had already built up in the area.
Police warned motorists to avoid the area and expect delays.
