A damaged volleyball court at a Northcote reserve in Christchurch will get an artificial surface - but no one knows when.

Local resident Gary Watts has pushed for permanent repairs to the court at Paddington Reserve for about 12 months.

He first lodged a request to Christchurch City Council in February last year.

"It would be much appreciated to learn why the playing surface hasn’t yet been made safe for use.

"It is quite a major concern. The mayor, Phil Mauger, was even quite disturbed to learn this information when he visited Paddington Reserve a few months ago,” said Watts.

A city council spokesperson said Mauger visited the park in January and thought there was a bit of a health and safety issue with the dirt on the court.

He asked the head of parks to look into it.

"Over the last 18 months, the court has experienced an increase in casual use, resulting in increased wear and tear," the spokesperson said.

"The turf court was renovated in October 2023 and has since been safe for use.

"Staff have replaced the volleyball net and repaired the turf for now and are looking at a longer-term solution."

But the city council didn’t say when the new artificial turf would be installed.

Papanui Ward city councillor Victoria Henstock, who engaged with Watts about the issue, also didn’t know.

"However, I am delighted to learn staff have confirmed they are working towards a long-term solution and are currently engaging a specialist sport turf contractor to install an artificial surface, offering year-round play for the community. That’s a great result."
