Macpherson played just the one test for the All Blacks, in the Baby Blacks test against France in Christchurch in 1986.
Macpherson was picked for the next test against Australia in Wellington but had to withdraw because of a leg injury.
He never played for the All Blacks again but gave great service to Otago, playing 137 games for the province, from 1985 to 1993.
Macpherson (46) is believed to be living in Scotland but is returning to Gisborne, where he was born and educated, for the ceremony.
He first played first-class rugby for Poverty Bay.
In all, 10 All Blacks will receive their caps in Gisborne, including former All Black loose forward and captain Ian Kirkpatrick.
It is the only ceremony to take place outside the main centres.
Two of the players to be given caps, Brian Fitzpatrick and Hamish Macdonald, are the fathers of sons who want on to become All Blacks, Sean Fitzpatrick and Angus Macdonald.
The final capping ceremony will take place in Hamilton on September 11, the night before the All Blacks play the Springboks at Waikato Stadium.
