A strange round of club rugby.

University A smashed Zingari-Richmond 137-0.

The game was called off 10 minutes early as Zingari collapsed under a University blitzkrieg.

It is the highest score recorded since the Otago Daily Times began keeping records in 1976 and in all likelihood the highest ever.

There were more shocks, as Green Island upset Dunedin 43-20 and Kaikorai thrashed Taieri 42-15.

Alhambra-Union snapped its losing streak, with a 40-25 win against Pirates, while Harbour consolidated its spot at the top of the standings with a solid 24-17 victory against Southern.

Green Island              43
Dunedin                      20

Green Island turned up to play and Dunedin didn't.

Green Island was aggressive from the outset on its home ground and dominated loose play.

It sent numbers to the ruck when sensing turnovers while Dunedin did not turn up to loose play in numbers at any stage.

Green Island attacked the Dunedin defence on the inside channels and was waved through.

Second five-eighth Taisei Hayashi walked through four feeble tackles to stroll over and get the game under way.

Dunedin bounced back with its only constructive patch of the game when centre Leroy Van Dam - the only back to come out of the game with any credit for the Sharks - brushed through the tackles to bring the game back to all square.

Green Island scored early in the second spell when centre Oli Knopp exploited the non existent inside defence to crash over and from that point the game was done.

Dunedin was playing catch-up but with numerous turnovers, aimless skip passes and fumbles, was well off form.

The home team piled on the points in the last 10 minutes to thoroughly embarrass the top four contenders.

The only real competition in the game was the battle at scrum time between Highlander Ross Geldenhuys and Otago prop Donald Brighouse - probably a draw.

Nobody played badly for the winners but loose forwards Jackson Hemopo and Matt McCutcheon owned the ruck.

Geldenhuys and hooker Ricky Hollamby were strong up front.

Knopp was the best back and fly half Sunia Makasini controlled periods of the game well.

It was a struggle to find any performers for Dunedin.

Lock Mark Grieve-Dunn and Brighouse were its best forwards and Van Dam tried hard out wide to stem the tide.

The rest best left unsaid.

Harbour                 24
Southern               17

Harbour pounced on some early mistakes to take an early 12-3 lead at Watson Park.

Southern had struggled to get its hands on the ball and when it did it failed to wrap them all the way around it.

A couple of fumbles proved very costly.

First five-eighth Josh Ioane got the dropsies first and the Hawks swung into action.

Classy winger Jerome Harimate popped up on the right flank, palmed off a defender and drew another to put Hale T-Pole into space.

He galloped 15 metres and passed to winger Sala Halaleva, who scored.

Southern fullback Jono Hayes coughed up the ball shortly after and Harbour went to work again.

After many phases, Charles Elton eventually crashed over.

The stunned visitors replied through Mika Mafi and Harbour nursed a 12-10 lead at the break.

But then two quick tries to the Hawks stretched the lead to 24-10. Sekonaia Pole scored the first from a lineout move, although the pass to him looked forward.

No problem with the second, though.

Naulia Dawai went on a rampaging 30m run and was then on hand to pluck a loose pass out of the air and score.

Southern managed a late consolation try to steal a bonus point.

Halaleva, Aleki Morris and James Tomkinson were all playing in their 50th game.

Alhambra Union           40
Pirates                          23

Alhambra-Union must have been wondering what it had to do to get a win this year.

It was stuck at the bottom of the standings with six consecutive losses and just four bonus points to show for all its hard luck.

But it more than doubled its season tally with a healthy win against the struggling Pirates outfit.

It ran in seven tries to one and would have won more comfortably had it drilled a few more conversions.

Pirates competed well up front through Highlanders pair Craig Millar and Mark Reddish and lock Jared Williams.

Centre Sam Shearer grabbed an intercept to score Pirates' only try, while first five-eighth Kieran Fowler knocked over six penalties and winger Will Scorgie worked hard.

But Alhambra-Union had too much class and pace out wide for Pirates.

Legin Felix-Hotham was a handful in the midfield.

Winger Tevita Inoke scored two tries, while prop Tristan Fuli also bagged two five-pointers and proved hard to tackle.

Fullback Cama Poasa scored right on fulltime to stretch the margin and ran evasively, while powerful No 8 Ty Pelasio was threatening in loose play and drove the ball strongly.

Kaikorai                    42
Taieri                        15

Taieri was hit by a thunderbolt, as Kaikorai attacked from all parts of the paddock and scored two early converted tries at Bishopscourt.

Forced into playing catch-up rugby, Taieri was not able to stem the tide as Kaikorai attacked with precision to score six converted tries and win 42-15.

First five-eighth Ben Miller played for Taieri in the early rounds but switched to Kaikorai because he was not getting enough game time.

It was only his second game in the pivot's role and he was decisive and created opportunities.

He scored the first try after four minutes and dodged through the defence early in the second spell to create two more.

Halfback Josh Renton, who had a terrific game, was heading for his second try when he was tripped by Taieri fullback Mitchell Scott inside the 22m.

Renton left the field injured after the incident.

Scott received a yellow card and Kaikorai punished Taieri when hooker Lachie Landels scored from a lineout soon afterwards.

Taieri kept the game tight and used its forwards to attack up the middle after Kaikorai's initial onslaught.

But lapses in the lineout allowed Kaikorai to make three takes off Taieri throws.

Taieri was not able to breach the tight Kaikorai defence that was spearheaded by midfielders Jayden Spence and Danny van der Voort and loose forwards Blair Tweed, Johnny Appleby and Slade McDowall.

University A                     137
Zingari-Richmond                0

University A fired a warning shot across the bow of Dunedin premier rugby in a massacre at Montecillo, running up 137 unanswered points before referee Mitchell Will called a halt to proceedings with 10 minutes remaining.

The defending champion has been in good form this season but few would have picked the carnage it was going to inflict on Zingari-Richmond on Saturday, a side that in recent seasons has for the most part held its own.

University's dominance began in the set pieces, where it relentlessly wore down the Zingari-Richmond pack through outstanding work from the front row trio of Angus Williams, Sam Sturgess and Callum Hardie, while Dillon Hunt's two tries were a result of a solid performance from the open side flank.

Lock Josh Dickson proved athletic around the field and his try had the hallmark of brilliant, quick-thinking play, while the back line functioned superbly under the direction of first five-eighth Fletcher Smith.

Obviously disappointed with its result, Zingari-Richmond should take heart from the fact it was up against a team that has all the hallmarks of a great side.

Flankers Liam Sharples and Steven Roberts worked hard all game in attempting to stem the flow.

First five-eighth Thomas Johnson did his best with what little ball he had to work with.
