St Kevin's College avenged last week's heavy defeat with a 22-12 away win over Taieri College today in the Otago Secondary Schools' First XV competition.
St Kevin's got the scoring underway with a try after 10 minutes, before Taieri hit back with a try of their own five minutes later. A further try to St Kevin's took the score to 10-5 at halftime.
The visitors struck first after the break with a converted try, before Taieri got one back to take the score to 17-12.
A try from inside their own 22 with two minutes to go saw St Kevin's clinch the win.
St Kevin's coach Justin Fowler said it was a good game and his team was "not too bad".
"We played well in patches," Fowler said.
"[We] started well and finished well, were a bit rough in the middle, but not too bad."
They looked to attack out wide and that was where their tries came.
He said it was an improvement on last week's 62-0 loss to Waitaki Boys' High School, although his team still had work to do.
"We're happier than we were last week, we took a hiding last week," he said.
"But certainly not the finished product by any stretch of the imagination."
Dunstan High School continued their good start with a 27-23 win over Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV. Meanwhile John McGlashan notched a bonus point in beating Waitaki Boys' High School 27-13.
King's High School were far too good for Kavanagh College, winning 60-11, while South Otago High School were convincing 73-0 victors over Mount Aspiring College.
