Rugby: Nonu rejoining Blues

Ma'a Nonu has joined the Blues after one underwhelming season with the Highlanders, and that may lead to Malakai Fekitoa coming the other way.

The protracted saga surrounding Nonu's future came to a merciful close yesterday when All Black coach Steve Hansen revealed the enigmatic midfielder was rejoining the Blues.

Nonu will play for a different Super 15 side for a fourth straight year. He was jettisoned from the Hurricanes, had one season for the Blues, and one season for the Highlanders, contributing little to a disastrous season.

The return to Auckland is fascinating given Nonu reneged on a handshake deal to play for then-new coach John Kirwan in 2012.

The 85-test All Black, who reportedly turned down an offer in France, will join another star recruit, league convert Benji Marshall, in a Blues jersey.

There was already speculation that Fekitoa, the 21-year-old Blues midfielder, was on the Highlanders' radar, and Nonu's return could confirm that.

Tongan-born Fekitoa was a sevens star out of school before enjoying a promising debut season with Auckland in 2012, earning Blues selection but not breaking into a match-day squad.

He is big (1.87m, 99kg) and quick, and there is a feeling he could be devastating if his potential is harnessed.

The Highlanders appear to be bolstering their midfield, with another former Blues centre, Winston Stanley, joining the franchise.
