Rugby: O'Malley key in St Kevin's upset win

The accurate goalkicking of Tim O'Malley helped St Kevin's College gain an upset win in the Highlanders First XV rugby competition on Saturday.

St Kevin's beat Kavanagh College 20-14 in Oamaru to gain only its second win of the season after 10 rounds. O'Malley kicked two conversions and two penalties to score half of his side's points.

Kavanagh led 8-6 at the break but St Kevin's played as a unit to take control in the second spell. Flanker Ryan Lill, hooker Bradley Clarke and wing Chris Bolton played key roles, while tries were scored by winger Jack Allan and halfback Acundo Briones.

Loosehead prop Hayden Fleury scored two of King's High School's six tries when Menzies College was beaten 39-12 in Dunedin. King's led 22-0 at the break and maintained its dominance in the second spell through the control of its forwards.

The pack played as a unit, with props Fleury and Ayden Lloyd giving King's a solid scrum.

Flanker Ben Johnson had a lively game with his strong tackling and support play, while the best of the backs were midfielder Tim Tolovae and winger Daniel Dam.

Flanker Alex Pierce scored two of Gore High School's four tries in its 25-21 win over Waitaki Boys' High School in Gore.

No 8 Morgan Mitchell was outstanding.

Sam Crowther was dominant in the lineout and hooker Chris Henderson had a solid game.

Gore led 17-7 at the break but Waitaki Boys' came back strongly in the second spell to get a bonus point.

Verdon College gained its first points of the competition when it drew 17-17 with John McGlashan in Invercargill.

Otago Boys' High School went on an eight-try romp when it outclassed South Otago 53-0 in Balclutha.

Otago Boys' played expansive rugby to lead 33-0 at the break.

Winger Paul-Eti Slater ran strongly with the ball in hand and Michael Collins had a sound game in the midfield.

When the southerly came through in the second spell, Otago Boys' kept it tight in the forwards. Blindside flanker Byron Dodge used his strength to score two tries. First five-eighth Sam Ellis kicked six conversions.

Southland Boys' beat Dunstan 57-7 in Invercargill.

Otago Boys' beat Kavanagh by default in the scheduled midweek game. Otago Boys', King's, Waitaki Boys' and St Kevin's have a game in hand.
