Lucy O'Reilly was having her third start for Jones, a rural bank manager who assists Wingatui trainer Paul Richards.
She took over the training of the 6yr-old mare from her father, Dave Jones, of Rakaia. Lucy O'Reilly had been placed for Dave from eight starts.
He shares the ownership of the mare, whom he bred. Lucy O'Reilly is a half-sister by O'Reilly to Pledge, whose five wins included the 2001 Canterbury Belle Stakes.
"I am just so proud of the horse," Jones said.

• Fellini followed up his Kurow Cup win with a last-stride win in the Clare Memorial Cup yesterday.
Fellini was one of three winners yesterday for trainer Michael Pitman, who had won seven races at Waikouaiti on Sunday.
Pitman had won the Clare Cup with Million Joys, ridden by Barry Pelling, in 1987.
Jamie Bullard who rode Fellini, won the Clare Memorial on Royal Miss (2007), Live By The Sword (2005) and Moody River (2001).
Fellini, owned by the Hunters syndicate, is among five horses Pitman has nominated for the Kumara Nuggets on Saturday. Pitman is of a mind to start Fellini providing the track is not affected by rain.
A change of rider would be required as Bullard is under suspension.
Fellini settled last in a seven-horse field yesterday and prevailed by a nose over Inferno, who tracked the pacemaker St Bernard and led in the stretch.
• Ya Sea, a 5yr-old who has spent 18 months in Hong Kong, won his first race yesterday. Ya Sea was sold to Hong Kong as a 3yr-old after winning a trial for breeders Shane and Sharon Anderton.
"They reckoned he wouldn't eat and he was sent back to New Zealand," co-trainer Brian Anderton said.
Wingatui trainer Terry Kennedy was offered the horse for the price of transport from the North Island. He alerted Shane Anderton who took the opportunity to take the horse back.
"He [Ya Sea] has been a bit nervy but I have put him over the drums [jumping] and done a few things with him. Jay [Misbah] has done a good job with him," Shane Anderton said.
Ya Sea is by the White Robe stallion Seasoned Star and the first foal of Ya Ya, a Yamanin Vital-Casino Pass mare who won an 1100m race at Omakau in 2003.

• Rosehill trainer David Payne lodged a late entry fee on Tuesday for the in-form Sydney filly Happy Hussy in the $1 million Magic Million Guineas.
Happy Hussy convinced Payne she was worthy of a Magic Millions start with her come-from-behind Rosehill win on Saturday.
The Hussonet filly has gone from strength to strength this term, winning three of her four starts.
Pre-post Guineas operators installed Happy Hussy on the second line of betting at $6 behind Safusa ($4.80) once her nomination was confirmed.
