Unique Star, the winner of 14 races for four different trainers, is now in the Ashworths Beach stable of Gavin Smith.

The 9yr-old, raced by breeders Peter and Beryl Boag, had his most recent win at Rangiora in July when trained by Peter and Leonne Jones.

"Peter [Jones] said he was working well and racing poorly and suggested a change of scenery. We have had him a fortnight. We have been galloping him on the lead for something different," Smith said.

"I will take him to a workout on Thursday. He might race on the grass at Motukarara."

The Joneses won three races with the Sundon gelding, taking him over from Mark Jones, who won eight with him.

David and Catherine Butt produced Unique Star to win a maiden trot at Blenheim in June, 2006 at his second start.

Unique Star had five starts for the Butts. He was then unplaced in two starts for Colin and Julie De Filippi before winning first up for John Versteeg.

Unique Star has faced the starter 96 times.

Mached Out (race 7) and Ladidah (race 5) are newcomers to the Smith stable racing at Addington today. Mached Out, who has not raced since February, won two races when trained by Phil Burrows. The Mach Three gelding finished fifth on grass in a five-horse field at the Motukarara workouts on Saturday won by stablemate Radar.

"He [Mached Out] slipped on the grass in the workout and missed away," Smith said.

Ladidah has had a fourth placing in 10 starts.

Faith Philly (race 4) is a maiden prospect for the stable today. The 3yr-old filly ran fourth at Oamaru last month in the first of her two starts.

Smith has Tennis Ball and Happy Chappy in the $3000 claiming race today. Both horses have a claiming tag of $10,000.

"He [Tennis Ball] should win on class alone," Smith said.

Tennis Ball has won 11 races, six when trained by Steven Reid and latterly five for Brendon Hill. He has had two starts since he was gifted to Smith this season. He ran seventh in the Green Mile at Methven last time. He won that race in 2010.

"He [Tennis Ball] is very much a day-to-day proposition due to unsoundness. His owner (Robert Famularo) was trying to find a riding home for him and I said I would take him for a month and he came right. We ride him for an hour in the surf each day," Smith said.

Happy Chappy has had four starts since joining the Smith stable in October. The 5yr-old won at Motukarara last month.
