Golf: Junior order of merit title secured by Smith

Harry Smith (Otago) claimed the junior order of merit title with average points of 218.8 for his best eight rounds in the competition.

Smith (18) receives a voucher for $750 which he can spend on golf-related equipment or activities.

He finished 12 points ahead of Queenstown's Sungwoo Han and Inia Logan (Wakatipu Junior) was two points further back.

The final two rounds were played at Millbrook and Jacks Point during the weekend but Smith was absent.

He is taking a golf management course in Sydney but amassed sufficient points last year to remain on top.

After a recent slump, Zain Pennycook (Lower Waitaki) was the star performer during the weekend, shooting 72 at Millbrook and 75 on a difficult, windy Jacks Point course.

Jack Turner (Wakatipu Junior) was the second-best performer with rounds of 76 and 78 while Jacob Bellamy (Port Chalmers) was third thanks to an impressive 71 at Millbrook.

Abby Crawford was the best of the girls with 67.8 points, heading Danielle Bailey (Wakatipu Junior) by four points.

The leading youngsters were able to play in the final with Sport Otago's Michael Ormandy as well as seasoned professionals Ben Gallie and Greg Turner.
