Golf: Women’s title to Canterbury

Canterbury finished strongly, winning all five games against Bay of Plenty in the final to take the title in the Toro women's interprovincial tournament which finished on the Ashburton course on Saturday.

The winner did not have such an easy route to the final after finishing 2.5-all against North Harbour in the morning semifinal.

The No2 players, Amelia Garvey and Ela Grimwood, finished all square and Canterbury squeaked into the final when Garvey won on the first playoff hole.

In the other semifinal, Bay of Plenty was dominant, winning four games and halving one with the Waikato quintet.

Meanwhile, Otago had success in the Saturday morning playoffs, beating Tasman by a 3-to-2 margin.

The Otago golfers had two wins, two halves and only one loss against the first South Island opponent they faced all week.

‘‘The team made the most of their opponent's mistakes, capitalising when they missed fairways and greens,'' team manager Lisa Joyce said.

‘‘We were getting better as the week progressed and the playoff win will mean we need to start setting some serious goals for next year.''

At No1, Jo Hicks-Beach was always in control as Eve Clarke struggled to keep the ball in play off the teeing block.

Hicks-Beach turned 3-up and finished square with the card when the match finished with three holes to spare.

Abigael Crawford (No2) came up against the experienced Emily Stenhouse, losing the first hole but making a birdie on the second to get back to square.

The pair halved the next four holes before Crawford had driving problems, losing the next five holes.

She fought back, winning holes to be dormie two down but lost the 17th hole to go down 3 and 1.

Tracey Storer (No3) had a tight game, turning square with Tasman's Tracy Bary, but she made a birdie on 15 to take the lead before losing the final hole to finish square.

Otago No4 Annabel Evans also had a close match with Sue Murray and there was never more than one in it throughout the round.

Evans made a birdie on the 17th to take the lead but finished with a half after losing the final hole.

Susan Greig was back in winning form, beating Tasman No 5 Jody Murray on the 16th green.

The pair were square at the turn before she won the 10th to take the lead but lost the lead after losing the 13th.

With a strong finish Greig won the next three holes to clinch a 3 and 2 win.
