Football: Will any crack the top XI?

Football will take centre stage during the Fifa Under-20 World Cup. A game from the tournament may eventually crack this list - a top XI football games in the South - compiled by Gavin Bertram.

 

1 New Zealand v New South Wales
Caledonian Ground, July 23, 1904

New Zealand's first international football foray was a one-goal loss to the intrepid NSW side. Dunedin's future Rhodes Scholar, Robert Farquharson, made his sole appearance for the country.

2 New Zealand v Australia
Carisbrook, June 17, 1922

A 3-1 win in New Zealand's first full international match preceded a win and a draw in the North Island.

3 Oamaru Rangers v Seacliff
Oamaru, August 25, 1925

Eventual champion Seacliff played just one game to reach the final of the inaugural Chatham Cup, beating Rangers 7-0 in the South Island final.

4 New Zealand v English Amateurs
Carisbrook, June 5, 1937

The visiting English Amateurs taught their colonial kin a harsh footballing lesson, conspiring to put 12 unanswered goals past them, including four from Corporal Stan Eastham.

5 Otago v English FA XI
Caledonian Ground, May 31, 1961

Another tutorial in the fine arts of English football, as Preston North End genius Tom Finney led a stellar side to a 10-0 win over an Otago team dominated by Northern players.

6 Sheffield United v Blackpool
Caledonian Ground, June 5, 1965

The two top-flight English sides toured New Zealand extensively, playing a showcase series for the B.O.A.C. Trophy. Sheffield dominated, including a 3-0 win before 9000 people in Dunedin.

7 Otago v Sheffield United
Caledonian Ground, May 28, 1975

Sheffield United returned to New Zealand a decade later, having just secured sixth spot in the English First Division, beating a creditable Otago side 4-1.

8 Otago v England B
Caledonian Ground, June 5, 1978

Before Bobby Robson took the reins of the England side in 1982, he managed the B team. Stacked with future internationals, including Paul Mariner, it beat Otago 6-0.

9 Brazil v Paraguay
Carisbrook, November 21, 1999

In a world sense, the biggest football match yet played in Dunedin. Brazil disposed of Paraguay 4-1 at Carisbrook in the quarterfinal of the Fifa Under-17 World Championship, and went on to win the title.

10 New Zealand v New Caledonia
Forsyth Barr Stadium, March 22, 2013

The only World Cup qualifier New Zealand has ever played in Dunedin, a tense 2-1 victory over New Caledonia sealed deep into extra time by a Tommy Smith header.

11 Newcastle United v Sydney FC
Forsyth Barr Stadium, July 22, 2014

The first top English side to visit Dunedin since the emergence of the Premier League in 1992, Newcastle United put on an extravagant display to beat A-League side Sydney FC 4-0.
