Cycling: Kiwis create history in Copenhagen

New Zealand's road cyclists created history overnight by winning two medals at the UCI World Championships in Copenhagen -- the first time Bike New Zealand has won double medals at the same world championships.

Linda Villumsen won silver in the elite women's time trials and James Oram won silver in the junior men's time trials on a trying, wet 28.7km course.

Danish-born New Zealander Villumsen said she found the conditions more difficult than anticipated, but it did not change her approach.

"The first lap in the wet was a little bit tricky because you never know how fast you can take the corners but the second lap was okay because you knew and none of them were dangerous.

"It was harder than I thought it would be. That was to my advantage. It was a strong head wind which was pretty bad, it seemed like a climb.''

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Oram had to wait two hours before his time was beaten, to place him second.

"It was pretty nerve wracking that was for sure. I really needed to go to the toilet but they held me there as the leader.

"I came in here thinking that a top-10 performance would be great. And if I was lucky then top-five would be an absolute dream. So to get a silver medal is pretty crazy. It's not really sunk in yet.''

Tonight New Zealanders Jesse Sergent and Jack Bauer will compete in the elite men's road race.
