The all-rounder will provide cover for Black Caps duo Jimmy Neesham and Nathan McCullum.
The pair will play against Wellington but will join the national side in South Africa for the one-day series and will miss the remainder of the campaign, including Sunday's match against Central Districts at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth.
It is likely Sam Wells will join Otago in time for Sunday's game.
Ian Butler carried the drinks in the comprehensive 93-run win against Central earlier this week and will probably be lumbered with the role again, while Robertson will join him on the sideline.
A determined run chase from the Central Stags ended the Auckland Aces' HRV Cup playoff hopes at New Plymouth's Pukekura Park yesterday. After posting a competitive 181 for six from 20 overs, Auckland was unable to break the 100-run third wicket partnership of Matthew Sinclair (71 from 52) and Ben Smith (59 from 31) until it was too late, and Central reached the target with three balls to spare.
It means Auckland's dream of reaching the top three playoffs is effectively over, with the Northern Knights and Wellington Firebirds both eight points ahead of them with two games to play.
While the result was disappointing for the defending champion, it was good news for Otago, which is now guaranteed a playoff spot even if it loses its remaining three round-robin games.
