Cricket: Wright to study England's form

John Wright believes New Zealand should take a leaf out of England's play book to beat Australia in their own backyard in next month's two-test series.

The Black Caps' coach is of course referring to England's resounding 3-1 victory in last summer's Ashes series, where the English put Australia under plenty of pressure with patient batting and a dangerous pace-bowling attack.

Wright, who named his 13-man squad today to travel across the Tasman, said he had a plan in mind of how to topple the Australians.

"We've got a fair Idea. England, I think, provided a really good example of how to bowl at them. Particularly last year and the batting of Alastair Cook was exemplary at the top of the order. He's very patient. Played very straight,'' Wright said.

"So England did provide, in some ways, a game plan of how to play best against Australia. So you look at that. You look at your own side and to be honest, you know, game plans at this level aren't that complicated. We know that we have to bat four sessions and we've got to find a way to take 20 wickets.''

New Zealand's ability to snatch 20 Australian wickets has been boosted by the return of Tim Southee, who missed the recent one-off test with Zimbabwe due to a knee injury.

The Northern Districts right-armer returned to the bowling crease with seven wickets against Wellington in the Plunket Shield this week.

"We missed Tim in Zimbabwe. He's still got a little bit of work to do. So that's where that [Australia] A game is pretty important in Brisbane. But he's the leader of the attack. We are pleased with Doug Bracewell's progress. So he's in form as well,'' Wright said.

Southee's new-ball partner is likely to be the seemingly age-less Chris Martin, who continues to steam in at 36, while rookie Bracewell showed plenty of promise against Zimbabwe.

Bracewell was rested during the week and didn't play in the Plunket Shield, while the newcomer to the bowling group is left-arm seamer Trent Boult.

Boult, 22, has been in sharp touch for Northern Districts during the opening two rounds of this summer's Plunket Shield.
