The Otago women's side of Yvonne Fogarty, Ruth Foster and Emma Paton won the South Island championships in Timaru in nailbiting fashion over Canterbury at the weekend.

With the scores locked at three matches each, it came down to the final match between Fogarty and Lesley Gardner, of Canterbury.

In the deciding fifth game, Fogarty found herself down 9-5 and it looked all over.

But she clawed her way back into contention, and got the score back to 11-11. Then some great defensive work from Fogarty put her in front and she closed it out to win the fifth game 13-11 and give Otago the title.

The men's team played Canterbury in the final match of the round-robin format, which was effectively a final.

However, the Otago team of Ben Duffy, Andrew Marr and Leon Kong found the going too tough against a Canterbury side which had a team made up of former European players.
