Barry the bull is making a name for himself.

Waikaka Redford 2266 won the supreme beef exhibit and yearling bull categories at the Wānaka A&P Show earlier this month, beating a lineup of more than 60 cattle entered across various breeds.

Waikaka Herefords owner Laurie Paterson said it was "extremely gratifying" to come out on top.

He described the bull’s estimated breeding value (EBV) data as "out of this world".

Semen was being taken from the bull this week.

Animal genetics company Livestock Improvement Company wanted to use the semen in the dairy industry and it would be interesting to see how he performed.

Four keen and enthusiastic staff from Te-Ainge Poll Hereford Stud near Armidale in Australia had been shouted a trip by their boss to show cattle at the Wānaka A&P Show.

One of them, Holly Speers, led Waikaka Redford 2266 and won the senior handler prize at the show.
