Ball switch spotted

Ballswitchgate? A little ungainly, perhaps. But there was definitely a whiff of controversy over England's attempt to pull the old switcheroo at Otago Stadium on Saturday night.

First five Jonny Wilkinson was warned by the referee for twice attempting to exchange balls before he took a conversion.

Wilkinson, who is understood to be unhappy with the slightly altered ball used at the tournament, missed five kicks in England's opening game at the indoor stadium two weeks ago.

"England were warned at halftime because they were attempting to use a different ball for kicks at goal," a World Cup spokesman told the Guardian newspaper.

"They are supposed to use the same ball for conversions with which they have scored a try. It happened twice and they were told to desist, which they did."

The incident was brushed aside by England coach Martin Johnson after the game.

"I think in the first half Wilko thought one of the balls was slightly less than perfect, but the ref said he can't do that, so we got on with it," Johnson said.

"The details of a ball when you're a second row aren't that important. When you're kicking it off the touchline, it is."
