The All Blacks will now feature eight changes for the World Cup pool match against Japan after Colin Slade was called in for injured first-five Daniel Carter.

Carter has been ruled out of match in Hamilton on Friday after failing to overcome a sore back sustained in the tournament's opening game against Tonga in Auckland on Friday night..

The star pivot had been named in coach Graham Henry's starting XV for the match at Waikato Stadium, but will now make way for Slade, whose promotion means that halfback Jimmy Cowan comes on to the bench, and Piri Weepu provides first-five cover.

Fullback Mils Muliaina, on 98 tests, returns to the side, while the other changes in the backs are at halfback, with Andy Ellis getting his first start of the Rugby World Cup, at centre where Conrad Smith returns in place of Sonny Bill Williams and Cory Jane has been named on the right wing.

Muliaina has been recalled to the side to win his 99th cap, as he continues his battle with Israel Dagg for the starting spot at fullback for the rest of the tournament following Dagg's impressive performance in the All Blacks 41-10 victory over Tonga last week.

Dagg, who scored two tries in the first half of the tournament opener at Eden Park, is not even in the matchday 22 for the game against the Pacific Nations Cup champions.

Captain Richie McCaw will play in his 100th test.

All Blacks Coach Graham Henry has today saluted McCaw's contribution to New Zealand rugby.

"Richie is a very special man. He provides inspiration to New Zealanders because of his total commitment to enhancing the reputation of New Zealand through the success of the All Blacks team.

"He is incredibly brave, skilful and a hugely intelligent player who has the total respect of his team through the many deeds and successes he has achieved on the rugby field, and his ability to lead from the front.

"On behalf of the All Blacks coaches, management and fellow players, I would like to congratulate him on being the first player in All Blacks history to achieve 100 Tests - a truly remarkable milestone.
