The horses were sent home early from the West Otago A&P show at Tapanui at the weekend, but the wet weather did not keep the punters away.

Show secretary Emily Donovan said despite cancellation of the showjumping and grand parade, and abandoning the merry-go-round, the first spring show in the South Otago region was a success.

''Everything else went ahead,'' she said.

''Everyone soldiered on. Everyone's still smiling and enjoying themselves and that's the main thing.

''What can you say except it's wet.''

She said the annual show on the second-to-last weekend of November had enjoyed sunshine in the past, but this year the grounds and the parking lot were soggy.

The good-sized crowd thinned in the afternoon as the rain continued.
