Airshow with extras planned

Wings, wheels and water will be combined for a Twizel event being planned for September.

A new committee is planning the event to mark the 10th anniversary of an airshow held over Lake Ruataniwha in 2002.

This time, the committee is looking at making it even bigger with not only aircraft, but also boats and vehicles at the lake on September 22.

That is because members have broad areas of interest, including marine craft, classic cars and motorcycles, military guns and vehicles, original earthmoving equipment from the Twizel hydro project, radio-controlled aircraft and others.

"We are appealing to a wide range of family members and will have all manner of stalls and ground displays," event controller Steve Ochsner said.

The South Island Rowing Complex on Lake Ruataniwha would be the base for the event, having the required infrastructure, including ample parking, a viewing and commentary tower and a public address system.

It was the ultimate venue for public safety and crowd control and provided a great view of planes and water craft, he said.

The flying display would focus on working aircraft and the RNZAF would be invited, along with the army and navy.

It was also hoped to repeat some of the events from the first show, including a circuit race between a helicopter and a hydroplane.

There would be motorboats and hydroplanes racing on the lake and displays by jet skis and water skiers. On shore would be static displays of vintage cars, heavy machinery and motorbikes.

The airshow will raise funds for local charities.
