Motorists in Otago are being warned to take care over the prospect of slippery conditions on roads caused by forecast rain later today.
The New Zealand Transport Agency says rain is forecast from late this afternoon in north and central areas of the region and it could bring about the condition known as 'summer ice'.
It says highways and other roads in these areas have been subjected to hot dry conditions for several days and may become slippery once dampened by this expected rain.
The NZTA says the areas that could be affected are:
- Oamaru airport (SH1)
- Oamaru (SH1)
- Tara Hills (SH8)
- Lindis Pass (SH8)
- Cluden Hill (SH8)
What is summer ice?
During long dry spells, dust, dirt, oil and other materials build up on the road surface. When it rains, the road surface becomes greasy, making it very slippery - the greatest risk to drivers being shortly after the rain starts. The term ‘summer ice' is used to describe these conditions, which are similar to the black ice that you get in winter.
Even a little rain after several days of dry weather can trigger these conditions, creating a potential danger for unsuspecting drivers.
Be summer ice smart by:
- Keeping your speeds down on wet roads after a long dry period.
- Taking extra care on curves.
- Increasing your following distance from vehicles in front of you.
- Braking and steering gently.
- Allowing extra travel time in case you encounter summer ice conditions.
