Tampering with ATM raises security concerns

Police in Oamaru are warning people to be security conscious after a Westpac ATM was tampered with on Thursday afternoon.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said between 4.30pm and 5pm, a security guard alerted police that a device had been used in the Westpac ATM in a possible attempt to steal eftpos or credit cards after they were inserted.

Police yesterday spoke to Westpac's Fraud and Security division and said they were confident no cards or details had been obtained.

It appeared to be an ''amateur attempt'', Sgt Woodbridge said.

He said it was likely that the offender was ''shoulder surfing'' - watching people input their pin numbers at the ATM from nearby.

There are several security cameras in the area and police were yesterday reviewing footage to identify the offender.

Sgt Woodbridge urged ATM users to contact their bank if they had concerns about their cards not being ejected.

Anyone seen acting suspiciously around an ATM should be immediately reported to police, Sgt Woodbridge said.

Anyone with information about the tampering with the Oamaru Westpac ATM should contact the Oamaru police on 03 433-1400.
