Free firewood left over after logging on offer

People are being given the chance to collect free firewood on Cape Wanbrow left over from logging operations.

They will need a permit from the Waitaki District Council, and will be checked to make sure they are complying with safety and other conditions.

The permit will be valid for one week (Monday to Sunday, 8am to 5pm) and is restricted to firewood for personal use. The firewood cannot be sold.

''While we have placed restrictions on the permit, we have endeavoured to make the system as fair as possible, allowing as many people to collect firewood as is safe and practical,'' council parks manager Mike Kwant said. Permits were free and available from Monday from the council office in Thames St.

The opportunity would last until a second phase of harvesting begins in early August to remove trees which had been left for their amenity value.

Many other trees had been blown over by strong winds, or suffered damage because of wet conditions and waterlogged soils since the first phase of logging was completed and Cape Wanbrow reopened on Anzac Day.

The additional storm damage to the remaining gully trees at the cape meant the council had made the difficult decision to proceed with a further harvest, Mr Kwant said.

The harvesting would require the closure of the cape to recreational users for about four weeks from early August, but it would be open for public use on weekends, when walkers and bikers would see signs and hazard tape indicating hazardous areas.
