About 200 extras are being sought for Peter Jackson's film The Hobbit when filming is done in the Twizel area in late November and December.
This week, advertisements are appearing in South Canterbury and Otago newspapers seeking people interested in being extras in the film - as townspeople and elves.
For townspeople, production company 3foot7 said it wanted men and women between 30 and 80 years old with interesting character faces - men with beards.
"All shapes, sizes and ethnicities welcome," the studio said.
For elves, it wants people between 17 and 35 years old, more than 168cm in height.
The casting calls will take place at the Wanaka St John training rooms on September 23; Twizel Events Centre and Tekapo Community Hall on September 24; and Oamaru Opera House Empire Room on September 25.
