Civil defence costs up

Civil defence costs have blown out in the Waitaki District Council budget for the financial year, Council chief executive Michael Ross said about $110,000 extra costs had been caused by the Christchurch earthquakes, widespread flooding in Waitaki last May and subsidence at Moeraki.

The council would need to decide how this could be funded.

One option was to use the council's civil defence emergency fund.

Mr Ross said the expenditure was: the May floods ($57,000); the cost in staff time and vehicles to assist in the Christchurch earthquakes ($19,000); costs in staff time, consultants and contractors on stabilising land at Moeraki ($34,000).
