Police offices and non-sworn staff yesterday marked Police Remembrance Day with parades in Alexandra and Oamaru. The observance included a minute's silence to remember the 29 staff who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The names of fallen colleagues read out in Alexandra included Senior Constable Peter Umbers, who was killed in May 1990 near Ranfurly, after he stopped a robbery suspect.
