Five seek seat on council

Five nominations have been received to fill the vacancy on the Central Otago District Council for a councillor to represent the Earnscleugh Manuherikia Ward.

They are Roger Browne, nominated by Bernice Lepper and Clair Higginson; Jeff Hill, nominated by Trevor Dyke and Thomas Wink; Jane Mitchell, nominated by Janet Lucas and Mark Smith; Ric Oram, nominated by Robin Hume and Louise Joyce; and Jenny Simmons, nominated by William Randle and William Cameron.

Three nominations were received to fill the vacancy on the Roxburgh Community Board: David Eckhoff, nominated by Holly Pemberton and Geraldine Middlemiss; Raymond Gunn, nominated by John Rowley and James Buchan; and John Preedy, nominated by John Kerr and Stephen Darling.

Central Otago Mayor Tony Lepper was encouraged by the number of nominations"I was worried that people were not prepared to put their names forward for these very important positions in our community.

The number and quality of candidates is very reassuring, a sign that people do realise that they can make a positive difference by being involved."

Elections will be held by postal vote, on February 10, 2011.

Voting documents will be sent to all electors in the Earnscleugh Manuherikia and Roxburgh wards between January 19 and January 24.

Council electoral officer Kara Leckie said voting documents must be returned by post or delivered no later than noon on February 10, 2011, to the electoral officer at the council offices.

The elections will be held under the first past the post system.
