Toddler dies in in Melbourne yard crash

A toddler was killed and a man seriously injured when a car struck them as they sat on their veranda south of Melbourne.

Police say the man in his 60s was sitting with the two-year-old boy outside a Sorrento home yesterday evening when a female occupant of the home tried to park her car on the front lawn.

Police believe the woman mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the car to burst forward and into the duo on the veranda.

Paramedics worked on the toddler but he died shortly after.

The man was airlifted to The Alfred with serious injuries after being pinned between the car and the house.

The incident came at the end of a horror day on Melbourne roads, with two other drivers dying in separate crashes.
