More than 1000 Otago school pupils had their thinking caps and running shoes on for the annual NumberWorks Mathletics Competition in Dunedin yesterday.

Otago Mathematics Association president John Major described the event as periods of "chaos" as teams worked their way through sets of questions in different age group sections.

Sixty-one schools and 1090 pupils from Waiwera to Oamaru took part, Mr Major said.

Since its inception in 1977, the event mixed mathematical and problem solving talent with athletic prowess, making for a challenging and exciting event, not only for competitors to take part in, but also for supporters to watch.

Mr Major said the event was great and "I am exhausted".
