Road safety, access improvements set to start

Work on bus stop, walking and cycling improvements along Frankton Rd, expected to cost about $150,000, will begin on Monday.

New Zealand Transport Agency senior safety engineer Roy Johnston said the improvements on the road - part of the state highway network - would provide safer and better access from Queenstown Hill to existing and new bus stop facilities, footpaths, cycle paths and the Frankton Track.

From this week work would include two "pedestrian refuges'' on the lake side of Frankton Rd, one near Larch Hill Pl and the other near Perkins Rd.

The refuge near Larch Hill Pl would connect to the footpath and cycle path, while the Perkins Rd refuge would provide safer access to and from the Frankton Track, footpath, cycle path and bus stop.

A new bus stop would also be established on the hill side of Frankton Rd at Larch Hill Pl.

After winter a new footpath, connecting Hensman and Andrews Rds with the bus stop opposite The Rees hotel, and a third pedestrian refuge would be constructed.

That was the first stage of improvements to the Andrews Rd intersection, a collaborative project funded by the NZTA and the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Mr Johnston said the work would be carried out by Fulton Hogan.

The first stage would take about two months to complete.
