Cardrona is getting closer to having short- and long-term improvements made to its sewerage.
The Wanaka Community Board at its meeting last week adopted recommendations the Cardrona wastewater treatment plant be upgraded and wastewater reticulation work proceed.
In a report to the board, project manager Rob Darby said the upgrade would involve doubling the size of the plant's disposal field as an interim measure, with an upgrade of the plant's treatment capacity also needing to be considered.
As well, detailed design of the township's sewer mains had been completed, with construction work to be carried out in stages, beginning this financial year.
Cardrona has had norovirus problems caused by its wastewater and drinking water systems.
A long-term solution of piping waste water 22km down the Cardrona valley to Wanaka's Project Pure treatment plant is being considered.
The board adopted Mr Darby's recommendation the council proceed with "modelling'' the pipeline and, depending on the outcome, proceed with detailed design work.
In his report, Mr Darby said modelling was required to establish the practicability of the pipeline and to develop costing, for comparison with on-site treatment either at the existing plant or at the Snow Farm treatment plant.
The modelling, costing $45,000, would include an assessment of the pipeline's practicality, infrastructure requirements, a cost estimate, operating methodology and risk assessment for both the pipeline and connection to the Cardrona Alpine Resort.
The council is budgeting to spend $549,000 on the reticulation work in the 2016-17 year and $100,000 on the upgrade of the disposal field.
The recommendations adopted by the board will be considered by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
