Wanaka car enthusiast Jim Ledgerwood did a rare thing this week.

He sent one of his collection of valuable, mint-condition American cars back to where it came from.

His 1957 Chevrolet two-door hard top is now on its way to Clovis, California, where the car's second owner, Ron Gajarian, is waiting for it.

Mr Ledgerwood said this week he previously had no intention of selling the car until he received a letter from Mr Gajarian, who had restored it and sold it at auction in 2004.

"My immediate reaction was, no, I don't sell any of my cars.

"But on further reflection ... here's a guy who had that car most of its life and would like it back again.

"So the car's going back.''

Selling the car would mean his 11 other classic American cars would be driven more.
