GNS Science geologists already working in the Queenstown area before yesterday's quake near Wanaka are expected to fly over its epicentre today, weather permitting.
Spokesman John Callan said they would be looking for landslips and ''possible streams and rivers that have been blocked ... any mass movements''.
The epicentre, 30km from Wanaka, was distant enough for there not to be any significant damage in the town, GeoNet geohazards information manager Kevin Fenaughty said.
''If you had a 5.8 [magnitude quake] under Wanaka then you would sure as hell know about it. Certainly, 30km is far enough away for it not to have caused any damage to houses and buildings.''
The GeoNet website last night showed at least a dozen aftershocks near Wanaka.
They were described as weak to moderate, ranging from magnitude-2.4 to 4.
