The immense popularity of the Hawea Picnic Races showed no sign of waning yesterday, more than 70 years on from the event's inception.

Held at the Hawea Flat Domain in blistering heat, the family-friendly race day attracted its usual huge crowd of punters, estimated by organisers to number about 2000.

The event is run annually by the Hawea Picnic Racing Club, which gives all proceeds to Lake Hawea community projects.
