Company owner Robert Rutherford said the refurbished aircraft, catering for seven passengers, was flown from the Australian manufacturer, Gipps Aero, directly to Queenstown in an eight-hour flight, piloted by Gerrard Lappin.
The company had stuck to a Lord of the Rings theme with its new addition, Mr Rutherford said.
Due to work on the films, its first airvan was registered LOR.
The new addition had been registered JRR - not only the initials of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings but, in a serendipitous twist, they are also the initials of Mr Rutherford and his wife, Janet.
About 200 GA8 Airvans are being flown worldwide and they had an ''unmatched safety record''.
The fleet had flown more than one million hours with no passenger fatalities or serious injuries since it was first certified in 2003.
Glenorchy Air is based at Queenstown Airport and flies to Milford Sound, Mt Cook, the glaciers and other South Island destinations.
