Queenstown operations not affected by balloon tragedy

Hot air ballooning activities in Queenstown have not experienced any issues in the wake of a fatal ballooning accident in the Wairarapa, where 11 people died on Saturday.

A spokeswoman from the Queenstown-based Sunrise Balloons said its commercial operations had not been affected by the accident.

Ballooning operations from Queenstown were "very safety-conscious ... we try to make sure we cover all bases," and no flight bookings had been cancelled, she said.

Ballooning operators elsewhere around New Zealand could do little in the aftermath of the incident in Carterton, except carry on.

"We have to wait until a report comes out about any safety issues, but until that happens, there is little that can be done. We are already very safety conscious," she said.
