Police have named a man killed in a light plane crash in Arrowtown today.

He was 59-year-old Ian Sloan of Tauranga.

Mr Sloan was the registered owner of the Cessna Skyhawk aircraft that was believed to be approaching a private grass airstrip when it crashed onto the Arrowtown Golf Club course this afternoon.

Despite attempts to resuscitate Mr Sloan, he was declared dead at the scene.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 60s were taken to Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown before being airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

Their injuries were described as moderate but both were believed to be in a stable condition, police said.

Golfers alerted emergency services to the crashed plane, which nosedived into a small embankment on the eighth hole at approximately 3.15pm.

The plane was returning from Invercargil to a private Arrowtown airstrip several hundred metres away from the crash site.
