Safety checks 'vital'

The death of two kayakers on Lake Wakatipu is a reminder of the importance of safety checks, "which are not rocket science", a Maritime New Zealand spokesman says.

Ross Henderson said the incident highlighted the safety procedures all people needed to make before heading out on to the water.

"I guess it does highlight the checks [people] need to make. People need to check the weather, and check with friends ... none of which are rocket science."

Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster Marty Black said Maritime NZ rules did not place time restrictions on kayakers on Lake Wakatipu.

The incident took place because the men were not carrying correct gear, such as a torch, and had not made vital "simple checks", he said.

Asked if the incident would prompt a review of maritime law, Mr Black said it was too early to comment and ultimately it would be the decision of Maritime NZ.
