Queenstown police prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin is facing a code of conduct inquiry after being caught driving at 149kmh.
Southern regional manager for prosecutions Inspector Richard Bruce, of Christchurch, said Sgt Collin had been issued with an infringement notice and an instant 28-day suspension from driving after being caught speeding in a police car in the Kawarau Gorge on April 28.
Drivers doing 40kmh above the speed limit are instantly suspended from driving and served an infringement fine of up to $630.
Insp Bruce said the code of conduct inquiry was an internal employment process to deal with questionable actions of police officers.
He declined to comment further and did not know when the inquiry would be completed.
Sgt Collin began working as police prosecutor for the Queenstown and Alexandra district courts in January.
He is based in Queenstown and moved there from Auckland.
He is the first prosecutor solely dedicated to the two courts, which had previously been served by rostered prosecutors from Dunedin and Invercargill.
Sgt Collin, originally from the United Kingdom, spent about 10 years in police work there before moving to New Zealand and previously worked as a detective.
