Car drives off high rise carpark

Two people seriously injured after a car drove off a high rise carpark building in Hamilton remain in hospital this evening in a stable condition.

It was also revealed tonight that the vehicle likely entered the car park at speed - jumping over wheel stops.

Police say the incident happened just before midnight when a car crashed off the third floor of a central city Wilson parking building and plummeted to the street below.

Police found the damaged vehicle in Alexandra St.

Two people inside the car, a man and woman, were both taken to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries.

Hamilton street cleaner Ricky Ngaronga, who was one of the first to come across the accident, said the car appeared to have reversed off the building.

He said it had plunged boot-first from the carpark's top level and crashed onto a section of veranda, smashing the clear covering before landing on the city street below.

The car then righted itself back on to its wheels.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating and Wilson Parking tonight released a statement saying their thoughts were with the two people and their families.

"Wilson Parking can confirm that it is working with [the Serious Crash Unit] regarding the incident and will supply relevant CCTV footage to the investigative team," the statement said.

"As with any incident of this nature, Wilson Parking will conduct a full review. An initial review of the site this morning found the perimeter barriers on level three of the car park - where the incident took place - to be compliant ...

"There are wheel stops in place in front of the barriers, but it appears the vehicle was travelling at speed and as a result it jumped the wheel stop and breached the barrier."

Most of level three was now operating as normal, but the affected area was cordoned off while police investigate.
