3News ends, Carolyn Robinson goes

MediaWorks has announced the end of 3News.

The 6pm programme will be replaced with a new current affairs show, Newshub Live.

It comes as the channel integrates its media platforms -- bringing television, radio and digital news services into one news hub.

The new service, including the 6pm programme, will be launched on February 1.

The 6pm programme will be presented by veteran anchors Hilary Barry and Mike McRoberts.

The channel's midday news show - which will be known as Newshub Midday - will be presented by journalist Jeff McTainsh, while Samantha Hayes will anchor the channel's late current affairs programme, Newshub Late.

Senior journalists Melissa Davies and Tom McRae will host the weekend's news programmes.

The format will see the integration of the 3News and RadioLIVE teams -- something McRoberts says will prove to be a big force when a big news story breaks.

"Journalism is all about communities, and with our integration our 'community' has just got a lot wider. I'm hoping that will be reflected in the diversity and depth of our reporting," he said.

"People will notice a significant difference when we have the next big breaking news event. Integration means we can throw our full resources into these types of stories and provide New Zealanders with the news and information often so vital to the affected communities."

Meanwhile, long-time journalist and anchor for the channel Carolyn Robinson is leaving her role to spend more time with her family.

Group head of news Mark Jennings praised her dedication and professionalism over the years.

"She is without a doubt one of the most polished presenters New Zealand has produced. Carolyn always combines precision and authority with warmth -- something only the best anchors are able to do," he said.
