Grenade find prompts airport evacuation

Part of Auckland Airport was evacuated this afternoon after a grenade was found in a package.

Inspector Kay Lane, of the police northern communications centre, said emergency services were contacted about the suspicious package at the International Mail Centre at 2.50pm.

The immediate area was evacuated and the Fire Service and St John Ambulance were put on standby while the Defence Force bomb squad investigated.

It was found to be an inert hand grenade with the pin removed.

Emergency services were stood down at around 3.30pm.
