A New Zealand 16-year-old who raped and kidnapped an elderly, infirm woman in an early morning home invasion is to spend eight years behind bars.
Jacob Oliver was sentenced in the High Court at Rotorua today after earlier pleading guilty to rape, sexual violation, aggravated burglary, kidnapping and intentional damage near Rotorua on March 25 last year.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the 72-year-old victim's son said a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother had been traumatised by Oliver.
"What would you think if this happened to your mother?" he demanded of Oliver, telling him he deserved everything he got.
Justice Geoffrey Venning described how Oliver, a friend of one of the victim's grandchildren, had armed himself with a filleting knife and gone to her home at 3am.
He wore a mask and hood to prevent his victim recognising him.
After raping the woman he'd cut out a section of her sheet, saying he didn't want to leave any DNA behind.
He forced her outside into her car and ordered her into the back seat, activating the child locks so she couldn't escape.
"You then drove towards Rotorua in a stupid, irresponsible way doing burnouts, skids and billowing black smoke from the wheels," the judge said.
His irresponsible driving continued until close to his home, where he left the car.
Traumatised and upset as she was, the woman managed to compose herself sufficiently to drive home and call a family member who alerted the police.
The next day, when one of the woman's family told him what had happened, Oliver had expressed surprise. Her car, which had been her pride and joy, had been so badly damaged her insurance company wrote it off.
Justice Venning said Oliver had regular drinking binges, smoked cannabis and had appeared in the Youth Court for using methamphetamine. His father figure associated with the Mongrel Mob.
