Man in coma after Auckland assault

A man is in a coma after being assaulted near Auckland's Viaduct Harbour this morning.

The 34-year-old is in a critical condition at Auckland hospital after the incident near Spy Bar about 1.30am.

Police have arrested two 36-year-old Aucklanders in relation to the incident, one from Pt Chevalier, the other from Te Atatu.

They will appear in Auckland District Court this afternoon on assualt charges. The Te Atatu man was also charged with possession of methamphetamine.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard says further arrests are likely.

"It appears the victim was involved in an altercation near the Spy Bar in the Viaduct Basin and fell to the ground during the incident.

"We are carrying out a scene examination of the area and are in the process of collecting and viewing CCTV footage of the environment at the time.

"We'd very much like to hear from anyone who witnessed a fight or any events leading up to the assault that has left this man in a coma.''

The victim's parents have arrived in Auckland from another part of New Zealand to be with their son, police said.

The incident happens a day after a fight broke out on nearby Swanson St.

An officer at the scene said a fight got "out of hand''.

Anyone with information about either incident should call Auckland police on 09 302 6400 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
