The planking fad has reached out to the highest office in the land.

A photograph of Prime Minister John Key and his son Max was posted to a Facebook planking page at the weekend showing Max lying horizontal on the back of a couch while an awkwardly rigid looking Mr Key stands behind him, the Dominion Post reported.

More than 100 people had "liked" the Facebook photo and one person commented "Tell dad to plank the Beehive".

The photo was taken down this morning.

Planking involves a person lying flat on their stomach across an unusual space with their face down and arms at their side.

It hit the headlines when an Australian man died after falling seven storeys while attempting to plank on a balcony in Brisbane and has spread across the Tasman.

In other cases in New Zealand, a Tauranga schoolboy was shown online planking across a railway line as a train approached and three Fonterra employees were suspended after they were caught planking a Timaru's Clandeboye dairy factory.

It is understood the incident, captured on a mobile phone, happened last week and took place nearly three metres above the ground.

Fonterra requires staff members to get permission to work at heights of more than two metres and to wear special safety equipment, such as a harness.

A planker was also photographed lying atop the 12-metre-high Caroline Bay aviary in Timaru.

Police have warned people of the dangers of planking on precarious buildings or objects.
