Death-metal singer's killer still on loose: police

Wellington police say that despite a confession from a man who was later found dead, they are still confident someone will be charged for the murder of a death metal singer found stabbed to death three months ago.

Matthew Hall, 35, a mental health worker who was a long-serving member of death metal band Backyard Burial, was found dead from stab wounds after a ferocious attack in Broderick Rd, Johnsonville, on February 15.

The murder weapon has not been found.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton told the Dominion Post parts of the confession, made to a friend by fellow death-metal singer Tim Parlane and reported to police after he died, could not be corroborated.

Police were still looking for a large hunting knife missing from Mr Hall's home and also want to hear from a woman who visited Mr Parlane at his Petone home on February 14.

Mr Hall's brother Chris said the situation was a living nightmare.

"It's pretty hard when I walk around the street and this person is out there in the community."
