Lotto winners don't quit their day job: survey

The dream of one day telling the boss you won't be in the next day, or ever again, doesn't seem to be a priority among big-time Lotto winners.

A survey carried out by New Zealand Lotteries found only 4 percent of Lotto's latest big winners chose to retire, while 88 percent were still working in the same job.

The survey asked just over 100 recent winners about how they felt when they won, whether they thought they would win and what the winnings had been spent on.

"As you'd expect in a nation of homeowners, paying off the mortgage was the most common big purchase made by winners, with nearly a quarter of winners telling us this was their biggest splurge," NZ Lotteries chief executive Todd McLeay said.

But once that was paid for, another 18 percent travelled overseas, 18 percent bought a new car and 11 percent bought a new house.

"Kiwis are a pretty stoic bunch, so it was not surprising to see that 88 percent of winners were still working in the same job after their big win, with just three winners saying they had retired as a result of the win, and another six saying they had changed jobs, often to something less stressful or part-time," Mr McLeay said.
