Paul Henry feels betrayed

Disgraced former Breakfast host Paul Henry says TVNZ encouraged him to be controversial, but then let him take the rap for on-air slurs that sparked strong public reaction, forcing him to resign.

Henry, in an exclusive interview with New Idea magazine, said he felt TVNZ management had regularly encouraged him, and accepted the entertainment value derived from the way he performed.

"They did capitalise on me," he told the magazine.

"I was the performing snake with the sting in its tail. The better the performance, the greater the encouragement. And then when I turned around and bit someone's head off, they were happy to see the demise of the snake.

"I don't think it was reasonable. I was surprised with the speed with which the mood changed. My overwhelming feeling was I'd turned from an asset into a liability."

Henry resigned from TVNZ last month after becoming the subject of several hundred complaints to the broadcaster over a slur he made about Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand and mocked the name of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Henry told New Idea he had nothing to be sorry about, despite the public outcry and said he was "appalled" New Zealand officially apologised to India over his comments.

"It was unreasonable for India to seek an apology, and worse that we gave one," he said.

"We are apologising for one person in the country exercising their right to freedom of speech.

"I think that's an outrage."
